Customize Products for the Spring + Information on Extracts and Pigments
Every season means something different here at NourishUs Naturals. For us, Spring usually makes us think of “spring cleaning” our inventory, pastel colored skin and hair care products, and the sweet smell of floral essential oils. This year, we wanted to show you how we bring that first bloom of Spring into our products, by customizing our favorite body cream with a pop of Spring! Browse through our essential oil blend category, where you’ll find seasonal scents, or for any mood. For Spring our favorites are: Flower Power and Bouquet Essential Oil Blends Both have Lavender, Lemon and Ylang Ylang Flower Power Essential Oil Blend also has Geranium, and is a clean and mild scent of floral and citrus. Bouquet Essential Oil Blend has extra warmth and lush from Palmarosa, while Ho Wood adds depth. Just like Spring flowers, color adds vibrancy to our world, affects our emotions and moods, and makes what may otherwise seem ordinary, extraordinary. As individuals we’re drawn to certain colors, and while you may not know exactly why, it probably has something to do with how that color makes you feel. With the powerful impact color has, it may be time to consider adding a little color or pigment to your hair and skincare products! Working with Extracts and Pigments While playing with color is certainly fun, there are a few important things you need to know when working with pigments and extracts. 1. Extracts and pigments are 2 completely different ways to add color to products. Extracts are natural, and are relatively easy to add to cosmetic products. They are fun powders from plant sources expertly combined to not only provide their beautiful innate color but to also impart the skin-loving benefits of each plant. On the other hand, most pigments are synthetic, though some natural ones do exist. Overall, the pigments are created for consistency in their color however, they do require a little extra attention before adding to a cosmetic product. Read to the end of this blog to see two different recipes. One for natural extracts, and one for pigments. 2. pH is a huge factor when it comes to color. You may have seen hydrangea bushes that are a brilliant blue one year, and then pink the next. This is due to the pH of the soil (and the availability of aluminum and other elements but that’s another topic). A higher pH will help produce a pink flower, and a lower pH will help produce a blue flower. Be sure to experiment with this as adjusting pH to be ideal for skin may change the color significantly. Extracts & Pigments FAQs Will these stain my skin or clothes? In all of our testing, none of these colors and pigments have stained skin, however, it’s possible that staining could happen. We suggest testing a small area of skin before using it to make sure it doesn’t stain. We have noticed that they do tend to stain clothes so be sure to test colors on fabric before using. Are these safe to use for kids?Yes, generally these are safe to use for kids, however, please seek medical advice if your child consumes any color or pigment. We know you’ll have fun working with all of the different colors NourishUs Naturals offers. Share your favorite color projects with us on social media, we’d love to see what you create! Customization Time! Spring Body Cream Ingredients 1 gallon Moisturizing Body Cream - staff favorite! 2.5 net oz maximum of Flower Power Essential Oil Blend (or any essential oil or blend of your choosing) 0.0032 net oz - Katthari Violet Water Soluble Powder (or any similar water-based powder extract of your choosing) Equipment: Handheld immersion stick blender 70% Isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol for sanitizing 1 bowl for mixing the product 2 small bowls for weighing out the ingredients The Process Can be done in your gallon container! OR for ease of mixing, you can pour into a bowl Clean your working environment and equipment first and then sanitize with alcohol Measure out your extract and your essential oil/essential oil blend Pour the ingredients into your cream product and high shear mix until completely homogenized.a. For the extract, just sprinkle and stir until you get to the color you want. If you are doing this in a larger quantity perform your actual weighing of the extract. Add more extract if desired— remember to start small and add more. Then transfer to fun jars or bottles and get creative with your packaging and labeling!a. Make it more vibrant by adding more extract, or keep it subtle for a pastel for spring. If you change any manufacturer's products and plan to go to market, make sure you are sending it to a third party lab for preservative efficacy testing. Patch Test: Always do a patch test before using the blend extensively, especially if you have sensitive skin. Apply a small amount to the inside of your wrist or elbow and check for any irritation within 24 hours. Bonus Recipe/Customization! For Pigments Keep your color before summer comes with our Tinted Moisturizer customization. Ingredients 1 gallon Jojoba Lotion (or whatever lotion of your choosing, we also love our Cucumber Lotion because of it’s fresh scent!) 0.0128 net oz to 3.84 net oz of Brown Iron Oxide (depending on the depth of bronzer you want) Equipment + Process Similar to our Spring Body Cream recipe listed above in this blog, however there are a few main differences. How to Effectively Disperse Brown Iron Oxide Since iron oxides are insoluble and tend to clump, proper dispersion is crucial, so pre-mix with a hemisqualane, or propylene glycol at about 10-20% pigment load. Before adding a pigment to your product and attempting this Tinted Moisturizer recipe, be sure to view our video on working with pigments, so you know exactly how to work the into your product without having gritty bits, uneven tones, or unexpected results.

5 Point Checklist – Are Your Labels FDA Compliant?

5 Point Checklist – Are Your Labels FDA Compliant?
Over the past few years the FDA has increased its pursuit of cosmetic companies breaking rules and laws, so below is a 5-point checklist to help you on the road to FDA compliance. Looking for more information? We have another blog on this topic!  Need to know: FDA Monitors Cosmetics All cosmetics marketed in the United States, whether they are manufactured in the US or are imported from abroad, are monitored and regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) under the authority of Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic (FD&C) Act and the Fair Packaging and Labeling (FP&L) Act. The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic (FD&C) Act is a set of laws passed by Congress in 1938 for the safety of food, drugs, medical devices, and cosmetics. The Fair Packaging and Labeling (FP&L) Act was enacted specifically to protect consumers from unsafe or deceptively labeled or packaged products by prohibiting interstate commerce of adulterated or misbranded cosmetics (as well as food and drug devices). As part of their mission, the FDA also monitors the marketing of cosmetic products to ensure they – cosmetic products — are not improperly labeled or marketed as an actual medicine or drug. This means that any claims that are made to treat or “cure” a condition, illness, or symptom must be backed up by clinical testing and trials—most cosmetics avoid this — and it must be made in an Over-the-Counter drug manufacturing facility, not a cosmetic manufacturing facility. The FDA has the right to tour any cosmetic manufacturing facility without warning to perform an inspection. They can both issue warnings and assess fees. Also, they monitor websites and other marketing materials to ensure you remain compliant with regards to claims and labeling. In this too, they can either issue a public letter of warning or pursue fines or both. And these fines can run into the millions of dollars, even for relatively small companies. We want to avoid any issues that may arise with the FDA, and we have made compliance a chief tenet of our business. While we are not FDA attorneys* and cannot provide specific legal advice, we do have a 5-point checklist we use with clients in our contract manufacturing side of the business to help flag any issues that might not meet FDA guidelines. The 5-Point Checklist for FDA Compliant Labels 1. Is your ingredient deck correct on your packaging?  Are all ingredients listed in full and in the correct order? Per the FDA regulation 21 CFR 701.3, the declaration of ingredients except for trade secret ingredients like flavor and fragrance, are to be listed in descending order of predominance. So in other words, the highest percentage to the lowest percentage. Everything under 1% can be listed in any order. There are a few exceptions to this rule and you can read more here on the FDA website. Is the ingredient deck on the outward most component of the product? Is it legible? Typically it is on the primary package (what is holding the actual product, such as a bottle) unless there is a secondary package, i.e., a retail box, and then the ingredient deck must be on the retail box. In the United States, you only need to list the common name – as we did above — but if you’re selling internationally, you’ll need to include the INCI. There are specific guidelines about typeface size, readability, etc., as part of the regulation as well. From the FDA website: Prominence: The declaration must appear with prominence and conspicuousness so that it is likely to be read and understood (read with ease) by ordinary individuals under normal conditions of purchase. The letters must not be obscured by design, vignettes, background or crowding. Type Size: Not less than 1/16 inch in height. It may be not less than 1/32 inch in height if the total surface area available to bear labeling (which excludes bottom, shoulder, neck, flange, decorative or sculptured surfaces) is less than 12 square inches. The type size consisting of upper and lower case letters is determined by the height of the lower case letter “o”. 2. Do you have the right net quantity of contents on your label? You never want to overstate the amount of product in a package, so it is better to give a slightly lower number that is in the package so you stay at the lower part of the margin of error. Your fill weight is not necessarily going to match the size of your bottle/jar/tottle/tube. A 2 oz container will hold 2 fluid ounces of pure water, based on the fact that the specific gravity of water is 1. Your container will hold less product if the specific gravity of the product is more than 1. For example, a 2 oz jar might only hold 1 net oz of powder, whereas it might hold 2.5 oz of cream. And a 1 oz bottle might hold 1.75 fl oz of toner. You will need to fill your jar and weigh it to get the actual fill weight for a net ounce label, or for your fluid ounce label, you will want a volume fill by using a volumetric beaker or cylinder. The term “net” and “net contents” is optional for fluids but required for weight. Net is used for products that are more solid than liquid. Think powders, scrubs, very thick creams, balms, and deodorant sticks. Net Weight 1 oz / 30 gm 1 oz. net wt. / 30 gm The term “fluid” (“fl”) is required to distinguish liquid ounces. Think oils, lotions, toners, serums, washes. 1.0 fl oz / 30 ml Net Contents 1.0 fl oz (30 ml) 3. Are you making claims? The FDA guideline is very clear: A product intended to be applied to the human body for cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness, or altering the appearance is a cosmetic. If a product claims to accomplish these deeds through physiological activity or by changing the structure of the skin, it is also a drug and must follow the guidelines for a drug. A product can be both a drug and a cosmetic, and the drug guidelines apply. This can’t hardly be stated enough and is one of the most frustrating things about making cosmetics you truly believe in that have produced great results. If there is any type of condition you’re referencing—be it irritated skin, acne, eczema, or age spots—stop and reword it. Talk about unhappy skin, oily teenage skin, or signs of maturing skin. Have a miracle product that makes wrinkles disappear? Reword! This is why you so frequently hear “minimizes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles”. Tip-toeing and creative wording become key. It takes a while to learn the myriad words that are not allowed, so be patient and ask trusted advisers or professionals what word works or doesn’t when it comes to staying FDA compliant. We steer clear of the word “renew” but have found “rejuvenate” to work. Avoid “heal” and opt instead for “balancing” or “restorative”. These words sound weaker than claim words, and they are, but this is simply how you must do business without further licensing in the cosmetic world. Avoid using 100% natural or All Natural as you can be sued for misleading your customers if just one tiny partial % of an ingredient is shown to be synthetic or lab-created or processed in such a way that a non-natural trace is left. Pro-tip: Managing your ‘claim’ vocabulary goes well beyond your label. Any marketing materials, emails, training, videos, ads, and social media posts are also to be ‘claim free’ as they are used to market your product and influence consumers. 4. Are you using defined terms you shouldn’t be? Promoting your product as ‘organic’ anything without the official USDA Certified Organic seal and certification is a big no-no. And although you see a lot of bottles out there with ‘organic cleanser’ on the front panel, without the USDA Cert. Organic symbol, know that this is actually violating the law. The exception is that you can write “X% organic content” on the back panel (but not the front) and you can’t say ‘made with X% organic content” because “Made With” is a defined term for certified organic products made with 70% organic material. “Made in the USA”, even using a flag icon, is a no-no-, too, unless every ingredient in your product is from the US. So yes, the products you buy from us are ‘made’ here in Oregon, they don’t meet the “Made in the USA” unless every ingredient comes from the US. You can say something like “Manufactured in the US of ingredients sourced from around the globe,” but to give the impression your products are “American Made” when it doesn’t meet the definition, is against the guidelines. Cruelty-free logos or images – like the Leaping Bunny or PETA’s rabbit face icon – are regulated and you must be an approved member or certified organization to use them. If you don’t have the correct credentials, consider using different images or words to imply your products were never tested on animals. Vegan is not regulated but you’ll want to be sure you are actually fully vegan — there’s no such thing as 95% vegan (and, yes, we’ve seen this on a label before). Tricky ingredients like beeswax, honey, goats milk, and silk will disqualify you. 5. Do you have the correct contact information on the back panel? The FDA regulations say you must include a way for your customers to contact you. The words: “manufactured for” or “distributed by” (Brand Name) You must also provide your contact details, including full company name, city, state, and website. If you do not have a website, you must provide the full street address and phone number so consumers may contact you if issues arise. There are so many detailed regulations around FDA compliance, including dozens more we have not covered here. Instead, we’ve addressed the most common issues we see with our customer labels, so take the time, in the beginning, to get the labels right. Let us know if you have other concerns or comments about FDA regulations, or how you handle them in your own business. * We always recommend you work with FDA, FTC, and FP&L qualified attorneys to help you navigate the complexities of cosmetic compliance. If you are selling outside of the United States, finding and working closely with a qualified attorney who knows the country or countries you are exporting to is critical to remaining compliant across your entire sales channel.

The MANual: Skincare Tips for Men
Skincare has traditionally been a women’s industry, but more men are now embracing the importance of caring for their skin. Over half of U.S. men use facial skincare products, reflecting a 68% increase since 2022 (Mintel, 2024). The average man can often be less knowledgeable about skincare. Which means they typically neglect simple staples like sunscreen. But knowledge is power and adding even a handful of items to their routine can make an impact! With Valentine’s Day approaching, it’s the perfect time to show the men in your life some love by stocking up on skincare essentials. Don’t know where to start, then let NourishUs Naturals help you. Given that so much of the beauty industry has focused on women instead of men in the past, there is room for a little skincare education. We’ve compiled some of our favorite starting tips and routines for men and hope either you and/or your customers find this information useful. We have also highlighted some of our favorite unisex products, to help build your new line. Identify Your Skin Type We hear (and talk) a lot about skin type, and sometimes it’s hard figuring what type of skin you have. It’s also useful to understand the kind of questions you should ask to help your customers identify their skin type too. Dry Skin – can’t get enough cream? Flaky or rough skin? If you’re not sure, wash and dry your face and wait a few minutes. Does your skin feel tight? If so, you likely have dry skin. Oily Skin – if your skin is often greasy-feeling or extra shiny, you likely have oily skin. Combination Skin – a mix of areas that are dry and oily. “Normal” Skin – no notable problems, and not sensitive to common products. Sensitive Skin – likely reacts to common products, stinging or burning after use. If you still aren’t sure or are worried you have the wrong products, check out this blog. Skincare Tips for Men What skincare tips apply to men? It varies based on personal preferences, but here’s a summary of a standard routine with some products for each step. 1. Moisturizer Suggestions It’s easy to forget to moisturize, but various creams, lotions, and even balms help lock in moisture and make skin look younger and softer. Use after a shower or cleansing (if you aren’t using a toner or serum first). Here are some rough guidelines: Dry skin can handle heavier creams, and you may want to consider balms for added moisturization. Here are some of our favorites, either unscented or ‘unisex’ scents: Basic Ultra Thick Cream Moisturizing Body Cream Calendula Butter Cream Oily skin will prefer lighter creams, perhaps sticking with lotions on the face or using gels as a moisturizer. Here are some great options: CoQ10 Hydrating Cream to Gel Simple Cucumber & Cranberry Gel Normal skin should be able to handle most options, and it will come down to your preference. Here are some moisturizers suitable for the middle ground: Daytime Moisturizer Antioxidant Cream Sensitive skin should avoid many ‘active’ ingredients and strong fragrances. Products with chemical exfoliants (think alpha hydroxy acids) should be avoided or used in small or diluted quantities. Here are some products for sensitive skin that our customers love: Baby Cream Goat Milk Cream 2. Wash Your Face We recommend washing your face daily with a gentle facial cleanser. Bar soap is often stronger and strips away the healthy oils, leading even oily skin feeling tight and thus under-moisturized. Wet your face with warm water and put a small amount of cleanser in your hands. Gently rub the cleanser over your face, watching out for sensitive eye areas. Rinse off with warm water. 3. Wear Sunscreen Sunscreen is one of the easiest ways you can look after your skin and preserve your natural youthful glow. Even on cloudy days UV rays penetrate the cloud layer, so choose an SPF and don’t forget to apply it to every area that the sun may hit—scalp, eyelids, ears, face, neck, etc. 4. Exfoliation is Crucial (especially pre-shave) "There are notable distinctions between male and female skin, and while these can vary depending on race, some universal differences exist. Besides generally having more facial hair, men's skin and women's skin differ structurally. Due to androgen stimulation, men's skin thickens by about 25% compared to women's, resulting in a tougher texture. In this, it is generally true that men's pores are larger than women's. This is primarily due to higher levels of androgens which stimulate sebaceous glands to produce more oil (as I state below). The increased oil production often leads to larger pores to accommodate the excess sebum. Larger pores can also make men's skin appear rougher than women's. Sebum production also varies between genders. After puberty, males produce more sebum than females due to androgen activity, which often leads to prolonged acne in men. While men have smaller sebaceous glands, their skin tends to be oilier.” – Laura Badcock (COO) Tip: Gentle exfoliation (especially pre-shave) is important for men. Exfoliation will help combat sebum build up and remove dead skin cells that help free ingrown hairs, overall helping the appearance of rough textured skin. 5. Be Careful Shaving If your skin is often unhappy or bumpy after shaving, you may be getting too close a shave. Try using a razor with fewer blades and avoid stretching the skin while shaving. As always, it’s best to soften hair with warm water and a good shaving gel or cream, and to change blades regularly. Follow our Shave Routine: Walnut Body Polish Removes dead skin cells that help uncover ingrown hairs and reveal soft, smooth skin on your face. Shaving Oil Unique combination of oils allows a smooth glide and close shave. Soothing Shaving Cream Provides a thin, flawless barrier for smooth blade glide and guarding skin against razor bumps or burn. AHA Aftershave Splash Great for any skin in need of soothing love, including after shaving, waxing, or for an anytime splash. AHA Aftershave Lotion Leaves freshly-shaven skin feeling soothed, conditioned, and revived with calming Aloe and Calendula. What Goes into Your Skincare Routine Now that you understand skin types and have a little more background information, you’ll have a better idea of what types of products will make sense for your skin. P.S. Keep in mind that at night you can, of course, skip the sunscreen! Step 1: Cleanse. Choose a facial cleanser appropriate for your skin type. Also considering using a gentle chemical exfoliant which uses mild and safe acids to gently slough away dead skin. Use warm water, instead of hot, and then gently pat your face dry. Browse Cleansers. Some favorite cleansers: Green Tea Facial Cleanser is great for dry and sensitive skin Equalizer Cream Facial Cleanser for oily, rough, or combination skin Wild Oats & Honey Cleanser or Simple Gel Facial Cleanser is perfect for normal-to-oily skin Step 2: Exfoliate & Tone. This is a less common step but many estheticians swear by it. Use a toner to help prepare your skin for the nutrients to follow, creating a mild base layer. Gently spray or splash a toner on your face using your hands, letting it air dry. Browse Toners. Some favorite toners: AHA Facial Toner for normal or dry skin Chaotic Facial Toner for oily, rough, or combination skin Calming Facial Toner for sensitive skin Step 3: Serum. This is the nutrient-packed antioxidant powerhouse of the routine, typically doing the most to minimize the signs of aging and keep skin looking bright and fresh. Browse Serums. Some favorite serums: Supreme Facial Serum for most skin types, rich in nutrients and antioxidants and a best selling favorite. Mildly scented so we recommend ordering a sample. Clarifying Facial Serum is designed to bring balance to combination or oily skin. Step 4: Moisturize. Here you’re setting up your skin for the rest of the day with moisture that helps skin look young and feel soft. We recommend adding a sunscreen, but since we aren’t certified to create SPF products, we recommend starting with a cream or lotion and adding in a sunscreen for days outside. Browse Creams. Some favorite creams: AHA Cream for all types of skin. May be too potent for only the most sensitive skin types. Antioxidant Cream for normal and combination skin. Rich in vitamins that reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Clarifying Facial Moisturizer is great for oily skin. Moisturizing Body Cream is perfect for dry skin. Sick of “skin types” or think you have normal skin? Try out our universal men’s routine, recommended by us: Step 1: Cleanse (daily) Vital Skin Cleanser Cleanse without stripping skin with the power of Charcoal (it’s an adsorbent, not an absorbent!) Step 2: Exfoliate (2 - 3 times a week) Blood Orange AHA Mint Walnut Polish Uses very fine-grained Walnut Shell Powder to remove dead cells that help uncover ingrown hairs and reveal soft, smooth skin on your face and body. Step 3: Tone (daily) Chaotic Toner Formulated with calming herbal extracts like Rooibos and Calendula to help soothe and restore balance to chaotic and/or oily skin. Step 4: Serum (daily) Ultimate Facial Serum Created for mature skin to tone, balance, and replenish. Includes Retinol, Niacinamide, Alpha Lipoic Acid, Carotenoids, and Vitamin C. Step 5: Moisturize (daily) CoQ10 Hydrating Cream to Gel Besides cleansing, keeping your skin hydrated is of the most importance. Try the light yet hydrating feel of our Coenzyme Q10 antioxidant gel, with Astaxanthin, Vitamin E, and Seabuckthorn Berry Oil. Bonus! Haircare: Beard & Mustache Oil Softens and smooths coarse facial hair while the skin below gets an extra dose of hydration. Sea Salt Spray Add body and sexy volume to hair with a quick spritz of this simple, natural spray. Hair Styling Cream A highly nourishing cream that styles for shiny, smooth, bouncy hair. We hope this article has helped you either figure out your own new skincare routine or start to create a line geared towards male clients.
