As the skincare industry prepares for the upcoming holiday season, the importance of a well-organized supply chain cannot be overstated. Over the past few years, supply chain disruptions have become a frequent challenge, impacting businesses across the globe. For skincare companies, these disruptions can mean the difference between meeting high demand and losing out on crucial sales. Here’s a closer look at the current supply chain challenges and strategies for navigating them effectively.
Understanding the Current Supply Chain Challenges
Post-Pandemic Disruptions
The COVID-19 pandemic has left a lasting impact on supply chains worldwide. Despite some recovery, the global supply chain has not returned to its pre-pandemic efficiency. Delays in the arrival of ingredients, materials, and products have become the new normal, and the skincare industry is no exception. The increased demand for raw materials, as well as workforce challenges, and other factors, have led to longer lead times and uncertainty in securing necessary supplies.
One of our team members shared their experience: "When I returned to the beauty industry after having left during 'the COVID years,' I was shocked, doubtful, and disappointed at the lack of expedient arrival of ingredients... It seems to me that every single business has been hit by labor shortages." This sentiment is echoed across the industry, highlighting the need for businesses to adapt to this new supply chain reality.
Increased Global Demand
The global economy has seen a surge in demand for raw materials and commodities, driven by factors like population growth, urbanization, and industrialization. This surge has put additional pressure on supply chains, making it more difficult to secure the ingredients and materials needed for skincare products. The skincare industry relies heavily on specific natural and organic ingredients, and shortages and delays have become more frequent.
Geopolitical Instability
Geopolitical factors such as conflicts, political unrest, and trade tensions have added another layer of complexity to global supply chains. These factors create uncertainty and volatility, making it challenging for businesses to predict and plan for potential disruptions. In the skincare industry, where sourcing ingredients from different parts of the world is common, geopolitical instability can significantly affect the availability and cost of essential materials.
Climate Change Impact
Climate change is increasingly affecting supply chains by disrupting agricultural production and transportation. Extreme weather events like droughts, floods, and hurricanes have become more frequent and severe, impacting the production of key ingredients used in skincare products. For example, ingredients derived from plants/crops can be significantly affected by weather conditions, leading to reduced yields and higher prices.
Labor Shortages
A lack of workers in key industries, such as transportation and manufacturing, has also contributed to delays and disruptions in supply chains. Labor shortages have been a persistent issue since the pandemic, affecting everything from production to shipping. This has led to longer lead times for materials to arrive at their destinations, creating planning challenges for businesses and making it difficult to maintain a steady supply of products.
The Need for Strategic Planning
Longer Lead Times
With the ongoing supply chain challenges, longer lead times have become the norm. Businesses can no longer rely on just-in-time ordering to meet customer demands. Instead, planning and ordering inventory well in advance is crucial to avoid stockouts and lost sales. For skincare companies, this means securing ingredients and packaging materials far ahead of time to ensure products are ready for the peak holiday season.
Diversifying Supply Chains
In today’s unpredictable environment, relying on a single supplier or waiting until the last minute is a risky strategy. Businesses that have successfully navigated recent challenges have done so by diversifying their supply chains and building in safety stock. By sourcing ingredients from multiple suppliers, skincare companies can reduce their reliance on any one source and mitigate the risks associated with delays or shortages.
As our team member noted, "We are all beholden to our vendors/suppliers and having a 3-month safety stock might not be enough anymore." Diversifying suppliers and increasing safety stock can provide a buffer against unexpected disruptions and help maintain a steady flow of products.
Safety Stock Management
Traditional safety stock levels might no longer be sufficient in the current supply chain environment. With longer lead times and unpredictable delays, businesses need to reconsider their safety stock strategies. Increasing safety stock levels can help prevent stockouts and ensure products are available when customers need them. However, it’s essential to balance the costs of holding additional inventory with the risks of running out of stock.
Learning from Recent Trends
Winter Weather Preparedness
Winter weather can have a significant impact on supply chains, particularly for businesses that rely on timely deliveries. As seen in past experiences, severe weather conditions can delay shipments and disrupt transportation networks. Skincare companies should take into account the potential for winter weather disruptions and plan accordingly, building in extra lead time to account for possible delays.
Adapting to COVID-19 Disruptions
The COVID-19 pandemic has taught businesses valuable lessons about supply chain resilience and adaptability. Many companies have had to rethink their supply chain strategies, shifting from a just-in-time model to a more flexible approach. By learning from these experiences, skincare companies can better prepare for future disruptions and ensure they are well-positioned to meet customer demand.
Conclusion
In today’s complex and unpredictable supply chain landscape, proactive planning and strategic diversification are essential for success. By understanding the current challenges and implementing effective strategies, skincare companies can navigate the supply chain disruptions and ensure they are ready to meet customer demand during the holiday season and beyond. Now is the time to review your supply chain strategies, diversify your suppliers, and build in safety stock to stay ahead of the curve and maintain a competitive edge in the market.
Dermatologists and skincare beauty gurus alike will tell you how amazing exfoliating is for your skin, and for good reason. Exfoliators are terrific at helping your body remove dead skin to reveal glowing skin underneath; but it’s not just your face that can benefit from a good scrubbing! If you’re interested in having glowing skin from head to toe, read on to learn how to properly use an exfoliating body scrub.
What To Look for in a Body Scrub/Polish
The type of body scrub you should choose will primarily depend on your skincare goals. If you’re looking for a deep clean to remove dead skin, you won’t need added ingredients to help soothe blemish prone skin or address other skin care issues. If you want a body scrub to help you with those issues, then you’ll need to shop accordingly. For those with oily and chaotic skin, body scrubs with glycolic or salicylic acid can help. If your skin is dry, you will need an extra boost of moisture and hydration; ingredients such as shea butter, rice milk, or vitamin E should do the trick.
However, there are a few red flags to look for in a body scrub/polish: the size of the particles used and the type of particles. Body scrubs are a physical exfoliant, which means the action of rubbing your skin with the particulates removes the dirt and dead skin. Plastic beads, rocks, and seashells are generally too harsh for your skin and can cause micro-abrasions that leave your skin unhappy. Look for particles sizes up to 800 microns, knowing the skin on the body is less sensitive and thin generally than that of the skin on the face. Additionally, the exfoliant should have finely-ground particulates to ensure no sharp angles cut into your skin–exfoliating should never hurt! Particles such as sugar, ground (not crushed) & powdered nutshells, and salt are okay, but must be rounded and not overly abrasive.
General Tips and Tricks
When you scrub any part of your body with a physical exfoliant, it’s best for you to take your time and rub in slow, gentle circles, rubbing the area for no longer than 30 seconds. Be sure to apply your body scrub using clean hands and only on skin that has been made wet with warm water. This step makes sure your skin is clean, and the warm water softens the dead skin so that it can come off easily. Additionally, you don’t want to exfoliate your skin too often, as this can lead to dry, tight skin, so we recommend 1-3 times a week for the face and up to 3 times a week for the body.
For those with sensitive skin or for those who are new to body exfoliation, stick to scrubbing once a week. If you feel like your skin can handle it, you can boost that number up to two or three. However, if you start to notice an increase in blemishes or your skin feels tight and dry, knock that number back down to one. If your skin is too sensitive for once-a-week applications, you may need to ditch physical exfoliants entirely and try a chemical exfoliant.
As your biggest tip, don’t ever skip out on the moisturizer after you exfoliate. While you want to get rid of dead skin, remember that it also acts as a way for your skin to trap oil. When you remove this layer, your skin can become dry as a result, so don’t forget to rehydrate. Always hydrate the skin after exfoliating to keep it moisturized and healthy.
How To Scrub Your Arms and Legs
The skin on your body varies in sensitivity from place to place. Before starting the process, it’s important to note that you should never use a body scrub on your face, lips, or scalp. These places are too sensitive for body scrub, and you should find an exfoliant specifically suited for that part of your body. While this article is about body scrubs, please note that for physical exfoliant’s on the face, the ideal particle size should be 100 microns or smaller. This would be fine, smooth particles such as rice flour, jojoba beads, or finely crushed and powdered grains.
After you wash your body, start with a dollop of body scrub and work in medium-sized circles. For your arms, you can work from your wrists all the way to your armpits if you choose. For your legs, you can work from your thighs down, but don’t forget to include your ankles, as a lot of dirt and dead skin accumulates there. Unless you’re diligent about thoroughly cleaning afterward, we recommend not scrubbing your bikini line. The particulates can irritate the skin as they rub into your skin as you walk, if not fully rinsed.
How To Scrub Your Torso
On your torso, you don’t want to go higher than your collarbone or lower than where your bladder would be. It is a bad idea to put an exfoliant anywhere near your genitals. While there is skin there, it is completely different from every other type of skin on your torso, legs, and arms. You may also want to avoid the areola, as the skin there is also extremely sensitive. Other than that, you should stick to washing with warm water and apply with slow, gentle circles. Don’t forget to scrub your back, chest, under the breasts, and any folds that like to hide dirt.
How To Scrub Your Hands and Feet
The skin on your hands and feet is a little different. Typically, this skin is much thicker than the rest due to how much friction they experience, and also has a thin layer of cells called stratum lucidum. Because the skin here is thicker, achieving smooth skin is a little more difficult. Fortunately, you can apply more pressure here than you would on other parts of your body. However, you’ll still want to follow the strategy of washing these areas with soap and warm water before working in small circles.
While you can scrub in between your toes and fingers, particulates can stick around, so be attentive and make sure you rinse everything off. For particularly dry and calloused hands and feet, you can exfoliate around three to four times a week. That said, you should start once a week and work your way up to this frequency.
The Benefits of Body Scrub
We know that body scrub is perfect for removing dirt and dead skin, but what exactly does that do for your body? Your skin has quite a few layers, with the top layer being your stratum corneum. That is where all your dead skin lies. While your skin will naturally eliminate those skin cells for you and reveal new ones—a process known as skin cell turnover—exfoliating helps speed up this process. By expediting this process, you help to smooth skin, reveal healthy skin cells, and make it easier for your other skincare products to penetrate deeper.
Now that you know how to properly use an exfoliating body scrub, you’re one step closer to attaining gorgeous, luminous skin from top to bottom! If you’re ready for a new beauty best friend, NourishUs Naturals sells bulk body scrubs with champion ingredients like pomegranate oil, aloe vera juice, and turmeric. We’re dedicated to using ingredients that make you look and feel your best.
As the holiday season rapidly approaches, businesses across industries are gearing up for one of the busiest shopping periods of the year. It’s no surprise that Gen Z and Millennials are the most active Black Friday shoppers. What may be surprising, however, is that only 9% sit out of this shopping period entirely.
For B2B companies, the pressure to have sufficient inventory ready for Black Friday and the subsequent holiday rush is immense. If you’re considering waiting to place your orders, you might want to think again. Here’s why stocking up early is essential to meeting your customers' demands and maximizing your sales this holiday season. And if you're looking for advice on when you should order from us, click here.
1. Ongoing Supply Chain Challenges
In the years since the COVID-19 pandemic, the global supply chain has struggled to return to its pre-pandemic efficiency. Delays in the arrival of ingredients, materials, and products have become more typical, and the skincare industry is no exception. The increased demand for raw materials, combined with labor shortages, geopolitical instability, and the impact of climate change, has led to longer lead times and uncertainty in securing necessary supplies.
These disruptions have created a new supply chain reality where longer lead times and unpredictable delays are the norm. As businesses navigate these challenges, it’s crucial to plan ahead and order your inventory well in advance, especially for the busy season. Waiting too long could mean missing out on crucial sales opportunities when demand peaks.
2. Avoiding Stockouts and Lost Sales
The holiday season is synonymous with increased consumer spending, and Black Friday serves as the unofficial kickoff. More than half of consumers (56%) are concentrating their holiday spending around BFCM this year, a notable increase from 47% last year (PR Newswire). Shoppers are looking for deals, and they’re ready to buy. If your shelves are bare because of delayed shipments, supply chain hiccups, or early bird shoppers, you’ll miss out on one of the most lucrative times of the year.
Stockouts not only result in lost sales but can also harm your reputation and customer loyalty. Customers who can’t find what they’re looking for may turn to your competitors, and they might not come back. A study by McKinsey & Co. showed that if something is out of stock, 70% of shoppers will pick another store or brand.
Meet Consumer Demand: As more consumers shop early, having your products in stock ahead of time allows you to capitalize on this trend and maximize your sales potential. According to BazaarVoice, 37% of shoppers will start their holiday shopping in September or earlier), and 23% will start in August or earlier. Missing out on early sales can be detrimental.
Additionally, Tapcart found 44% of consumers plan their Black Friday or Cyber Monday purchases more than a week in advance. Foster confidence and encourage purchases before Black Friday and ensure you stay in consumers’ minds for later purchase.
3. Changing Consumer Behavior and Early Shopping Trends
Consumer behavior has shifted significantly, with more shoppers starting their holiday shopping earlier than ever. According to recent consumer trends, shoppers are increasingly looking to avoid the last-minute rush, preferring to secure their gifts and essentials well in advance. For instance, Cyber Week alone drove $38 billion in 2023 and has been trending up 7.8% year over year. This means that businesses need to be prepared for an earlier spike in demand, not just during Black Friday but also right after and the weeks leading up to it.
By stocking up early, you’ll be ready to meet this early demand and capitalize on the entire holiday season, rather than just the traditional Black Friday weekend and/or the last-minute holiday rush.
Mobile moves ahead of desktop
For three years in a row, more sales came on mobile than desktop for Cyber Week: 51% in 2022, 51.8% in 2023, and 57% in 2024 (MobiLoud)! Optimizing for mobile has never been more important. As consumers spent time with friends and family, many used their smartphones to take advantage of final deals or to redeem gift cards. There’s no sign of slowing this down! Strong mobile growth in recent years has made this a key channel for retailers moving forward.
Online Vs. Retail
Prep Accordingly! 75% of respondents (from Driveresearch) planned to shop online for Black Friday in 2024. This year, online holiday shopping in the U.S. is expected to hit $288 billion this year—up about 2% from last season (Reuters).
Must-Have: Beauty Products
Beauty is in. 43% of Black Friday/Cyber Monday shoppers said they would purchase skincare/beauty products in 2024, and numbers are expected to be similar this year (Driveresearch).
Attractive Payment Promotions
Consumers are hearing the siren song of “Buy Now, Pay Later” services. Last holiday season, delayed payment usage hit an all-time high, contributing $16.6 billion in online spend, up 14% from the previous year and representing $2.1 billion more than the last holiday season. Responding to consumer trends like BNPL sets you apart from competitors.
4. Mitigating the Risk of Rising Costs
While last year’s concerns about rising shipping costs and inflation may have lessened, the risk of price volatility and higher holiday shipping rates still exist. Geopolitical factors, fuel prices, and other economic variables can quickly lead to unexpected cost increases. By securing your inventory early, you can lock in current prices and avoid the potential impact of rising costs later in the season.
5. Strategic Planning and Diversifying Supply Chains
In today’s unpredictable environment, relying on a single supplier or waiting until the last minute is a risky strategy. Businesses that have successfully navigated recent challenges have done so by diversifying their supply chains and building in safety stock. Having a three-month safety stock might not be enough anymore, and branching out to multiple suppliers can help mitigate the risks associated with delays or shortages.
Manage Logistics More Effectively: Early stocking gives you more control over logistics, reducing the risk of shipping delays that could impact your ability to fulfill orders on time. This is especially important during the busy holiday season when carriers are stretched thin.
Stay Ahead of Competitors: By securing your inventory early, you position your business ahead of competitors who may wait until the last minute. This advantage can be the difference between a successful holiday season and a missed opportunity.
Conclusion: Take Action Now
In a landscape where supply chain challenges and shifting consumer behavior are the new normal, proactive planning is essential. Stocking up early is not just a strategy for success; it’s a necessity. Ensure your business is fully prepared to meet the demands of the upcoming holiday season by securing your inventory now. Don’t let delays and shortages stand between you and a profitable Black Friday and holiday season—act today and set yourself up for success.
