A concentrated lactic acid solution (88%) supplied for use as a formulation ingredient in cosmetic and personal care products. As an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), lactic acid is widely used by formulators for pH adjustment, texture refinement, and to support the appearance of smoother, softer-looking skin. This is a versatile raw material for brands and formulators developing exfoliating cleansers, facial peels, body lotions, or hair care products where precise pH control and a polished skin feel are essential.

Intended Use

Intended as a post-added ingredient for cosmetic formulators developing exfoliating skincare, pH-balanced cleansers, body care, or conditioning hair care products. Not a finished product — requires incorporation into a complete formulation at appropriate usage levels.

Customization Notes

  • Formulators should determine final concentration based on target pH, product type, and intended cosmetic use
  • Pairs well with other AHAs (glycolic, citric, malic) in multi-acid exfoliation blends
  • Suitable for inclusion in products positioned around the appearance of smoother, more refined-looking skin

Option 1: Standard Formulation Incorporation

  1. Determine the target lactic acid percentage for your finished product based on the product type (leave-on, rinse-off, or cleanser).
  2. Add the concentrated lactic acid solution during the cool-down phase of your formulation, stirring slowly and evenly to incorporate.
  3. Measure and adjust the final pH of your product to the desired range — lactic acid will significantly lower pH, so buffer as needed.
  4. Test the completed batch for stability and sensory feel before moving to packaging.

Option 2: Multi-Acid Blend Development

  1. Calculate usage rates for each AHA you plan to combine — lactic acid pairs well with glycolic, citric, and malic acids for a balanced multi-acid profile.
  2. Add lactic acid and complementary acids to the water phase during cool-down, blending thoroughly.
  3. Adjust pH to the target for your product format — a toner may require a different range than a rinse-off peel or mask.
  4. Evaluate the finished multi-acid formulation for clarity, texture, and skin feel before scaling.

Option 3: pH Adjustment and Conditioning Use

  1. Use small, measured amounts of lactic acid to lower and fine-tune the pH of existing formulations — such as lotions, conditioners, or cleansers — that require precise pH control.
  2. Add incrementally, stirring after each addition, and test pH until the target value is reached.
  3. The humectant properties of lactic acid will contribute a smoother, more conditioned feel to the final product.
  4. Document usage rates for batch consistency and reproducibility across production runs.

Please Note:

While some of our stock products can be customized with scents, additives, etc., at-home customization should be done at your own risk. We are not liable for formulas that break as a result of customer alterations. Altering cosmetic products is a complex and variable process, and there is not a one size fits all method for the customization of any formula. We encourage you to experiment in small test batches, do outside research before attempting to customize a product, and have your customized product tested at a third party lab to ensure preservation efficacy.
