Evening Primrose Oil is the fixed oil obtained from the seeds of Oenothera biennis (Evening Primrose). This pale-yellow oil is rich in essential fatty acids including linoleic acid and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). It functions as an emollient and skin conditioning agent in cosmetic formulations, helping to soften skin and improve product texture. Commonly used in facial moisturizers, body lotions, hair conditioners, and serums to support skin feel and hydration.

Product Information

  • Dilute with lighter oils such as Jojoba Oil or Camelia Seed Oil to help Cold Pressed Evening Primrose Oil absorb more quickly.
  • A perfect superstar ingredient to add to chaotic, confused, and sensitive skincare lines.
  • Can be included as an ingredient in skincare formulations or used on the skin at 100%.

Incorporate into the oil phase of emulsions. No heating required; add at cool-down if heat-sensitive antioxidants are present. Typical use level 1-20%.

  • Solubility: Soluble in: oils (vegetable oils, fixed oils, cosmetic esters, light petroleum/mineral oil).
  • Dispersible in: N/A.
  • Processing Temperature: Add at: room temperature.
  • Heat tolerance: Heat-sensitive — prefer cool-down or room temp addition.
  • Avoid: high heat (>158°F/70°C).
  • Melting Point / Form: Liquid at room temperature.
  • Recommended Phase: Oil phase (heated or cool-down)
  • Recommended pH: N/A — anhydrous

Option 1: Facial Serums & Facial Oils

Use at 1–20% in anhydrous facial serums and oil blends. Rich in linoleic acid and GLA; add at room temperature or cool down and pair with an antioxidant to support stability.

Option 2: Emulsified Face & Body Creams

Add at 1–10% to the oil phase or cool-down phase of creams and lotions. Heat-sensitive, so avoid temperatures above 158°F (70°C) to help preserve the fatty acids.

Option 3: Targeted Balms & Concentrates

Use at 2–20% in balms and oil concentrates for the face and dry-feeling areas. Store light-protected and blend with more stable oils to support shelf life.

Option 4: To Add to a Finished Base

To incorporate evening primrose oil into a finished cosmetic base, stir it directly into the product at room temperature, since it is liquid and blends easily. Add it at 1–10% of the total weight while mixing gently and continuously until homogeneous. Because it is a heat-sensitive functional ingredient rich in fatty acids, keep the base below 40°C (104°F) and add it last, then check texture and consistency before repackaging. Skin should feel softer and well conditioned after use.
